Introduce yourself, your experience and your credentials

Saharnaz Montazeri is an Assistant Researcher at McMaster University.

Describe your research

My project is about the machinability of aerospace alloys. These are alloys used for component that operate at high temperatures such as jet engines and gas turbines. Because this material has a higher strength at high temperature and high resistance to thermal fatigue.

But the problem is that the machining of this allow is very difficult and challenging the main reason is that during the machining process the temperature and pressure at the cutting zone is really high and the material is rapidly worked harder.

Also there are some abrasive hard particle at the micro structure of this material which can have an effect on the tool. So all these parameters and factors can cause the poor machinability of these alloys.

Explain its significance

My project at MMRI is to develop the new technique which can protect the tool during the machining process, improve the tool life, and also help the industry to make the component faster cheaper and more accurate.
